ABOUT


Diego Vivanco (*1988, Bilbao). He graduated in Fine Arts in Spain and completed two postgraduate courses in Germany. He has been awarded several prizes and grants throughout his artistic career and conducted international residencies as in the Guggenheim Museum New York and in the Salzamt in Linz (Austria). Since 2008, he has exhibited his work on a regular basis in more than 10 countries, including renowned institutions such as the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and the Eigen Art gallery in Leipzig.

STATEMENT


I consider myself as a conceptual artist. In my works I question the social and political contexts by pointing to tension areas. These transform the reality in which I find myself in a tremendously influence factor and that why I am constantly searching for new environments. Recurring themes in my works are: cultural identity, communication and human behaviour in urban, nature and social structures; usually with a ironic note. I am always searching for the appropriate medium for each idea, experimenting with a big diversity of media. I understand my work like a continuously questioning invitation.

We asked ...

          What role do unrealized projects play in your artistic practice?

They are definitely memories of the moment when I was involved in the conception of idea. They tell about my interests, my worries, my aspirations, my failures, my dreams and the context in which I lived exactly at that time. A kind of mental archive. From time to time I check the "scrap yard" of these unrealized projects to to find out if I am inspired by them or if I have an idea or can save parts of it, which in some cases happens.


          How do you record your ideas for new works and projects?
I always have my notebook with ideas and a multicolored ballpoint pen with me. Sometimes it's just a word that triggers a new project, sometimes a longer text - but in most cases sketches. These notebooks combine both realized and unrealized projects.


         What do the terms 'possible' and 'impossible' mean in the context of your artistic practice?
The use of these terms has developed in my life and in the development of my artistic production. In some cases I was too naive to to describe something impossible as possible, and for this reason I do it on End of the line. Other times I was so afraid of something possible that I had end and thus made it impossible. This has led me to
concepts into perspective. Ultimately, it is only a matter of finding the right combination of to find factors and have the strength to believe in what you want to do.
