STATEMENT

The unending feeling of helplessness, invisible rust settles upon me, we settle for the draft as the final, Cinderella turns princess and I have become a cardboard cutout in a sports stadium. An exhibition of raw spices since the food  cannot be cooked. I sit amongst a mass of disobedient citizens who would go out to buy a single grain of sugar, my wife sits amongst the hardest lockdown in Melbourne, her isolation and my angst are both eating each of us up. An open call recognizes my helplessness and invites me to display my lived experience.

We asked ...

Who do you tell about ideas for new works? How does an idea become art?

My previous profession of journalism brings me in conversation with people from myriad walks of life. Conversations spark ideas for projects which I discuss with my wife and a few friends. These conversations further flesh out  the ideas. I don't believe in the individual voice of the artist genius, my works are conversations in progress.

What do the terms 'possible' and 'impossible' mean in the context of your artistic practice?

Possible is that which has been digested by my brain and excreted via my hands, impossible is that which is stuck somewhere between the shoulder and the elbow.
