ABOUT

As a late bloomer I started art academy in 2015. The study has laid a solid foundation for my future as a visual artist and the rest of my life. Becoming an artist has changed my life in uncharted ways. I am a passionate contemporary artist, making installations, short films and sketches. Just graduated I already contributed at ‘EN NU at Pictura, NL, and I created an installation in an old juvenile house of detention, NL. Eager to know what the future will bring me after the possible project.

STATEMENT

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could neglect the views on what sex is supposed to be and what we should look like, imposed by social- and other media. Girls and your women must be freed from that straitjacket!
Anneliek’s work is theatrical and outspoken. Her installations are realistic, scale 1:1. Her work is made with care: think of a window that can be looked through from the inside as well as the outside. Everything elaborated in detail: the wallpaper, the bricks and even the crocheted curtains, everything matched to detail. The installations are supported by short films or sound effects. Peeking and voyeurism is a recurring motive. Such as peeking through the peephole in a door or looking through a hole in the wall of a dirty toilet. The viewer is granted a look of what we usually don’t see: hairy legs, menstruation, sex or abortion.
Her work is often autobiographical, the images used are sometimes explicit, but never dramatic.
It must be shown: the not so glamorous everyday life of women.

We asked ...

How do you record your ideas for new works and projects?
An idea always starts as a seed. I elaborate on my existing work. I also get inspiration from the work of other artists I admire, watching documentaries, everyday life as a woman, reading books/articles. A lot happens in my head, I think a lot, an idea can be in there for days, weeks even months, finally I make notes in a book or on my phone. I do research and keep relevant related articles/images. Then I usually make some loose sketches and finally an inspirational sketch/drawing.

How do your unrealized works and projects differ from your realized ones?
My realised projects are installations which I finance myself.  I master the right skills to carry out/build installations. Sometimes I have to learn new techniques by experimenting, following tutorials, consulting other artists or professionals. If this fails an idea ends in the unrealized section. Participating in ‘unrealized projects and works’ hopefully will open new doors to allow this installation to be realised. I hope to get in contact with the right people to do so.

Who do you tell about ideas for new works?
First I have an idea, for a while, I have to sit on it. When it gets more of an executable form I start talking about it with people close to me who are not not directly involved in art but know me and my work.  I also talk with other artists, and graduates of the art academy with whom we created a community. This often gives me new insights and allows an idea to grow, change and starts forming. The process towards it is always surprising and an interesting journey.
